Children grow up fast, and so do their needs. A child’s bedroom needs to be adaptable so that he or she can play in it, have friends over, do homework and whatever else they might dream up. A bright room will stimulate their minds, it can also create a happy and comfortable environment. Cleanability is obvious, the faster you can put everything away the better. You’ll need lots of storage areas for toys, clothes and sports equipment to help keep the room clean and your mind at ease.

A good tip is to get your child involved, if possible. Children who feel they are involved with the design of their new room will have a greater sense of ownership, This sense of ownership can come in useful later on when asking him or her to clean the room or even just go to  his or her bed at nighttime. However do be aware that you should also ensure you are guiding your child in the right direction. Avoid faddish designs such as this week’s favourtie cartoon character or the brightest colour in the shop. Stripes, dots and checks are great for covering walls and curtains, they bring a fun environment and ensure lingevity. If there are demands to add a favourite cartoon character, be smart and go for cushions or soft toys that will be easier to change.

Bright, vibrant colours will fuel the imagination of your child. There is no need to stick to blue for the boys etc, there are plenty of colurs out there that can substitute for the staples. Some popular nursery color schemes are chocolate & light blue, chocolate & pink, chocolate & lime green, sage green & pink, black & yellow, navy & green, and red & pink. You can also go for themes based on your child’s preference. The list of ideas is endless, and many design companies have fabulous designs in their books worth browsing through. Some popular examples are :

• nature themes with big game wildlife,
• nursery rhymes or fairy-tales,
• ocean scenes from sharks to mermaids to pirates,
• sports themes like rugby, car racing or snowboarding.

Furniture is key when aiming for cleanability. When choosing your furniture remember to be practical and flexible while ensuring it all fits in with the design of the room. Are you after sweet and elegant white furniture, or tempted more by chunky and indestructible bright furniture? Storage is of great importance, think drawers under the beds and lots of chest and baskets for easy access to toys. Again if you involve your child you are more likely to end up with something that will please them, they might love putting their toys away in their favourite piece of furniture!

Flooring is another core consideration. Carpets provide great protection for your child when they fall and can also give you a sense of security. If you do have wooden floors then you will need rugs for that reason, just be careful not to have them such that your child will trip over the edge. You can also have great fun with a really funky rug for your child.

Safety should also be top of your mind when designing your child’s room. Get down to your child’s level to ensure you don’t miss any potnetial dangers. A few core tips are:

• Keep bunk beds for your older children, they’re not really suitable for under six
• For your windows note that blinds now come with a safety device that fixes all chains to the wall thus stopping children from hanging out of chains, and remember to fit childproof locks if windows are easily accessible.
• Use stoppers on drawers and doors to prevent them from slamming shut on little fingers.
• Ensure wall hangings and mirrors are securely fixed to the walls and won’t fall easily.
• Make sure all plugs and wires are safe and hidden as much as possible.

Remember that your child’s room should be their room. Hopefully you will have great fun designing it, and your children will be inspired by what you’ve created!

Drapes and curtains for your windows

The temperature has just started to drop, and the weather forecasters say we’re in for another snowy winter, our third in a row! Keeping warm in your sitting room might become your favourite pastime over the next few months if the snow from last year returns. Curtains always add a soft and cosy feeling to a room, and there are many things to consider when dressing your windows.

Curtains are one of the best ways of insulating your windows. They keep out draughts and can even create a feeling of warmth in the room. The key to creating warmth is interlining, adding this extra layer allows your curtains to insulate your house. Interlined curtains can also look softer and fuller, more luxurious. Interestingly, interlined curtains also serve to keep the heat out in the summer, normally not a major issue in Ireland!

Excluding light is important in some rooms, especially bedrooms or where you may have furniture that could be damaged by sunlight. Voiles are a handy solution if you’re looking to allow in some light, but want to keep the glare off your television. They can also provide privacy as well. However, if you’re looking for real privacy there’s nothing like drawing your curtains after dark to shut out the outside world.

The heading for your curtain is a critical decision when styling your windows. When aiming for a luxurious look in a traditional room choose elaborate valances, pelmets, swags and tails. These elements will frame your curtains, there are some great examples to be seen on TV in Downton Abbey. On the other hand, contemporary rooms will have simpler finishes such as hand-sewn french pleats on a simple pole.

The choice of fabric will also vary widely between traditional and contemporary styles. Silk is the smoothest and finest of all natural fibres. When light plays across silk curtains their superb texture and lustre come to the fore. Silk is also very delicate and prone to UV light damage so should be lined and interlined when used on windows. Velvet is another classic traditional fabric. It is rich and luxurious in appearance while also being a great insulator.

Cotton is a good middle ground due to its versatility and affordability. It can be woven into heavy upholstery cottons or light transparent muslin. Linen is another option, it has a distinctive crisp, dry, natural texture that makes it very appealing. Despite being strong and smooth it is infamous for creasing. It is frequently mixed with cotton to create linen union, which gives the best of both fabrics. Wool is particularly popular this season with all the top design houses this season. It creates a warm, sophisticated look.

Drapes always have more fabric in their width than in the length of the pole, this means they they fall into folds when drawn closed. Depending on your style, you can go for different levels of fullness. For example, velvet curtains in double fullness will provide a luxurious look to your window dressing.

Another option to consider is the length of your curtains. Floor length curtains are always more elegant than short curtains. For an even more opulent look you can opt to allow your curtains to pool on the floor. One mistake to avoid is stopping the curtain at some indeterminate point between the sill and the floor, this will give the impression your curtains have shrunk.

Lastly, curtain choices can help you to solve problems in your house. The right curtains can help to maximise the appearance of your windows. If you find your windows appear too short, hanging your curtains from just below the ceiling right to the floor will elongate their appearance. If your house or apartment has narrow windows, extend the rods beyond the window frames such that as much glass as possible is exposed, this will create more width in appearance. Exceptionally large windows can also be broken up by adding valances, multiple panels and choosing bold patterns.

Whatever your goal, curtains will always make your room look and feel more cosy. Consider investing in a set of drapes that will meet the needs of your room, and most importantly help you hibernate through another (allegedly) snowy winter!
